The Mechanical Characterization Resource Center is devoted to the most diverse materials: solid-state polymers, organic matrix composites, and metals. These characterizations encompass a broad stress spectrum: static and dynamic stresses, fatigue, and multiaxial loads under ambient atmosphere or temperature-and-gas-controlled atmosphere. In the laboratory, the Resource Center trains permanent members, pHd and students in the use of these various techniques.

Principal materials and applications:

  • Alternative fatigue benches for polymers and composites: 7 alternate fatigue units (frequency up to 10Hz); these units are equipped with 3 climatic chambers (temperature and moisture).
  • High-frequency fatigue benches: piezoelectric machine with stress frequency of 20kHz. Tensile/compression stress (R=-1). Possibility of imposing a constant stress component.
  • Dynamic piercing bench: possibility of shearing (open section) or piercing (closed section); piercing speed between 4m/s and 25m/s; piercing matrix set: 0.04mm or 0.1mm; measurement of stress and piercing speed during cutting
  • Quasi static tensile tests:
    • Electromechanical tensile/compression Instron 4301, 4502, 5881, range of stress cells between 100N and 50kN. Machines equipped with a thermal enclosure and mechanical and optical extensometer.

  • Gtest electromechanical tensile/compression (10kN) equipped with Videotraction® and accessory for biaxial stresses
  • THydraulic tensile/compression MTS850 (10kN), MTS 810 (100kN).
  • tensile microstage, making it possible to observe the test coupled with an optical system, up to 10N max, speed of 1 μm/min at 20 mm/min. Sample thickness from 5 to 200 μm.
  • High-speed tensile tests: brand: Schenk Hydropuls VHS 5020. Its maximum capacity is an applied force of 50kN, with a range of stress speeds up to 20m/s; image capture per high-speed camera (FASTCAM-APX RS High-Speed Video Camera).
  • Dynamic compression tests: this mechanism consists of Hopkinson bars. The test tubes are cylindrical (height and diameter between 5mm and 8mm). Deformation speeds can exceed 5000s-1.
  • Ultrasonic tests: Bench to determine rigidity tensor under a static biaxial tensile load; Ultrasonic goniometric bench for the determination of elasticity modules, Poisson coefficient, search for main axes in the case of transverse orthotropy materials and search for defects.

 

Most of these resources are located in temperature and humidity controlled rooms.
